  • Target recruitment and development for improved succession planning.
  • Introduce a two-week induction and orientation programme which will be conducted regionally.
  • Continue driving BBBEE skills development initiatives.
  • Obtain accreditation of the Training Academy to offer short skills technical programmes.

  • Launch an Adult Education Training ("AET") Programme at Betta Sanitaryware.
  • Develop, accredit, and implement a Ceramic Learnership (through the CETA), which will address the unique needs of our tile and sanitaryware factories.

2018/19 major achievements
ITALTILE
  • The CTM Sales Consultants' training programme was accredited by the Wholesale and Retail CETA.
  • We partnered with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology ("CPUT") to offer internships to students studying Retail to enable them to gain on-the-job experience required for their qualification. This partnership led to the permanent employment of several of the interns. We will continue to progress and leverage our relationship with CPUT.
  • Our 12-month pilot programme for persons with disabilities concluded in May 2019. 64% of the original intake has been retained in permanent positions.
  • Our 12-month learnership providing inexperienced and unskilled jobseekers with on-the-job experience resulted in a 55% absorption rate.
  • We continue to run our annual CTM Operator Training Programme in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch over a nine-month period to develop potential store operators. A total of 19 delegates graduated from the 2018 OTP programme.
  • High-Stakes Leadership in Action Workshops were run with our CTM store operators to develop a better understanding of leadership and building trust, based on a real-life event. Subsequent sessions dealt with improving communication with team members and providing strategic tools to enhance performance and results.
  • We introduced diversity, equity and inclusion workshops to the business, the purpose of which is to develop and embed a culture of inclusion by acknowledging differences and equipping diverse employees to build better relationships.
  • The recent Health and Safety audits across all retail stores and supply chain businesses yielded significantly improved results compared to the prior year's audit, achieved through various training and monitoring initiatives.

CERAMIC INDUSTRIES
  • A five-year Group Employment Equity Plan was approved informally by the Department of Labour.
  • Accreditation of the Apprenticeship Centre at the Samca Wall factory.
  • Formalisation and execution of the Mentorship Programme.
  • Implementation of the AET Programme at Betta.
  • Standardisation and updating of standard operating procedures.
  • Concluded cascading of KPIs.
  • Upgrade of HR and payroll software.
  • Implementation of software to assist with improving BEE score.
2019/20 priorities
ITALTILE
  • Introduce management programmes for our TopT franchisees.
  • Finalise the accreditation of the Tiling and Plumbing Academy which is currently with CETA for approval.
  • Continue driving BBBEE skills development initiatives.
  • Introduce the YES initiative into the business. YES is a business-led collaboration with government and labour to create one million work opportunities for youth in the country.
  • Drive the Learning Management System and continuously introduce new product information to better equip our employees with the knowledge required to successfully serve our customers.
CERAMIC INDUSTRIES
  • Embed our culture and values across the business through workshops and refresher induction sessions.
  • Improve awareness of the impact of alcohol and drug abuse and implement testing.
  • Finalise the accreditation of the Ceramic Learnership with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations.
  • Develop our talent pool through the Junior Management Mentorship and Apprenticeship Programme.
2019/20 prospects
  • Attract the best calibre of people by being the employer of choice in our industry through ensuring our employees are remunerated, incentivised and equipped to perform their jobs.
  • Continue to offer bursaries to our employees to enable them to further their education and remain ahead of the market.
